Hans Selye advocated stress theory in 1930s, and this theory forms our essential of biological philosophy still now. Interestingly, stress, found in the physiological study, became the target of wide areas of study, from psychology to molecular biology. There are three main streams in current stress study. The first stream is the psychiatric stress research for psychological treatment. The second one is the study of molecular mechanisms of stress response caused by mental load. And the third one is the molecular cell biological study which analyze the response of the cell to physical irritation such as heat shock, X-ray, and so on.The first stream has very tight correlation with the second stream, and these can be discussed successively. However, the last one, the stress research of physically irritated cells seems to be very different, even though these research streams are targeting the “stress” which origin is Selye's stress theory. It is clear that the evolution of cells progressed to save inner environment from the constant irritation by stressors from surrounding environments. As a result of this cellular evolution, the highly networked stress response mechanisms such can be seen in mammalian bodies were generated. Therefore, there can be a great possibility of crosstalk between highly networked mammalian stress response mechanisms and primitive cellular stress response mechanisms. This combining stream based on this hypothesis of crosstalk must progress the novel understanding of biological features about stress response. In this symposium, we are going to discuss about this possibility. |
