A number of proto-oncogene and suppressor gene mutations have been implied in sporadic forms of human cancer. In certain inherited cancer syndromes, only particular tumors occur with variable latencies in individuals with germ-line mutations of similar genes. To elucidate factors that influence malignant progression in retroviral tumorigenesis, lesions incuced in rats infected perinatally with feline sarcoma virus of ST-strain were examined immunohistologically with specific antibody to viral oncogene(v-fes) product (P85). By ABC immunostaining, P85 was seen at the surface of sarcoma cells but not cells in benign lesions. Benign lesions occurred prior to the antibody development. Upregulation of v-fes product expression appeared to be related with malignant progression of virus infected cells. P85 was seen at the surface of sarcoma cells grown in culture. They showed altered growth pattern in the medium containing tunicamycin(2 microgram/ml). The nature of alterations of the cell surface property related to their growth potential awaits further elucidation.
