The process of tumorgenesis is driven by the progressive accumulation of chromosomal aberrations. Numerical chromosome aberration in gastric cancer were investigated using a panel of 17 chromosome-specific centromeric α-satellite DNA probes except cocktail ones ( chrom 5, 9, 13, 14, 19, 21 and 22). Fresh touch preparations of 31 surgically resected gastric cancer tissues were analyzed by FISH and compared with histopathological variables. Numerical abnormalities in gastric cancer were most frequently found in chrom 1 and 2 from the early stage. Though chromosomal abnormality became extensive in a step-wise manner according to cancer progression, the abnormalities in chrom 6, 7, 10, 11 and Y occur in a relatively late phase, having a low frequency. Especially chrom 3 and 18 seems to be extremely protected and stable in terms of centromere numerical abnormality even after the tumor cells extending beyond the gastric wall. Gain was more frequently demonstrated, while the loss was seen in chrom 17, 18, 20, and Y. Furthermore, the profile of these sequential process was similar both in tubular and mucocellular type of cancer, but the prevalence were different.
