We investigated correlations of plasma concentration of MMP-9 with expression of it in tumor samples and other clinical features in patients with NSCLC. A series of 73 operated cases (45 men and 28 women) was used. Histologic types included 38 adenoca., 25 squamous cell ca., 8 large cell ca., and 2 adeno-squamous cell ca.. Preoperative plasma concentration of MMP-9 were measured with a one-step sandwich enzyme immunoassay. The expressions of MMP-2 and 9, tissue inhibitor of MMP (TIMP)-1, and TIMP-2 were confirmed in 24 tumor samples immunohisto-chemically. The plasma concentration MMP-9 in the patients with NSCLC (71.0±60.2 ng/ml) was significantly elevated than that of healthy volunteers (P<.0001). The concentrations of MMP-9 were elevated in 33/73 cases (45.2%) compared with a mean + 2SD in healthy volunteers. There were significant differences in adenoca. vs squamous cell ca. (P=.014) and adenoca. vs large cell ca. (P=.014). Five of 24 patients (20.8%) had positive staining in cytoplasm of tumor cells for MMP-9, and two cases had been positive in surrounding stromal cells. The elevation of plasma concentration of MMP-9 does not appear to correlate with production from cancer cells and stromal cells.
