Aims: We intravenously administered L-[1-13C]phenylalanine to rats, and evaluated the relation between expiratory 13CO2 and residual or regenerated liver weight after partial hepatectomy. Methods: The 13CO2 excretion rate in expired gas, following intravenous administration of L-[1-13C]phenylalanine, was determined before and after partial hepatectomy, and the relations of the postoperative / preoperative 13CO2 peak value to the postoperative residual liver weight / preoperative total liver weight and the regenerated liver weight / preoperative liver weight were evaluated. Results: The postoperative / preoperative 13CO2 peak value % correlated with the postoperative residual liver weight / preoperative total liver weight % (r=0.949, p<0.0001) as well as the regenerated liver weight / preoperative total liver weight % (r=0.934, p<0.0001). Conclusion: We determined the expiratory 13CO2 excretion rate using L-[1-13C]phenylalanine in rats with normal livers and found that the residual and regenerated liver weight percentages after partial hepatectomy can be measured based on the expiratory 13CO2 peak value.
