Inhibition of lung metastases in mice bearing Lewis lungcarcinoma by mycelial polysaccharide(ATOM) isolated fromAgaricus blazei (Iwade strain 101)「Himematsutake」 : Hitoshi ITO, Keishirou SHIMURA, Hiroko ITOH (Dept.ofPharmacol., Inst.of Lab.Animals, Mie Univ.Sch.of Med., Iwade Res.Inst.of Mycology)

The antimetastatic effect of ATOM and/or 5-FU was examined in an experimental model of lung metastases inducedby Lewis lung carcinoma in mice. Injection of ATOM i.p. after removal of the implanted primary tumor inhibited the development of lung metastases. Combination of ATOM and 5-FU inhibited significantly the lung metastases.
Lung metastases were inhibited by i.v.injection of peritoneal macrophages activated with ATOM. ATOM depressed the activities of hepatic drug-metabolizing system. The concentration of 5-FU in the tissues was increased significantly by coadministration of ATOM.
These findings raise the possibility that ATOM may have clinical value in the prevention of cancer metastasis.
